Transition from full time to contractor

I'm currently working as a full time (W-2) employee, but want to switch to work as an independant contractor in the same field.  This arrangement would offer me more freedom, and a better fit with my my personal goals.  Plus, the job market is in my favor for the line of work (ERP consulting).

I am actively pursuing other opportunities, but I do like my co-workers and I am open to working on a contract basis with my current employer.  What is the best way to approach my company about changing my work status from employee to contractor, without burning any bridges?  Is it better just to focus on outside opportunities, and resign once I get a better gig?

Thanks for your input!

In a general way, inquire of the human resources, your supervisor or any other person in the know if they have ever used or discussed pursuing an independent contractor. If the answer is a positive one, then find out who you would make this proposal to.

Do your research and make sure that you have the figures that would support your contention that an independent contractor would save time and money for the company and how it would improve the bottom line.

You should also determine what your fee for your services would be to the extent that you would be able to live on this. You should also figure out how many contracting jobs you could realistically accept without the possibility of drowning becoming a reality.
