Career Tips

Need to change career but how

I graduated in 1991 from Drexel University with a BS in Hotel, Restaurant and Intitutional Management.  From the start I had a great career; working with the best in Philadelphia Hotels/Restaurants.  Then I went into the private country club sector and found good clubs to work for but was always looking for more.  What "more" was I do not know, but I did leave my nice job a club a few times and was always lucky enough to go back.  The last time I left for what I thought was my "dream job" ~ Club Manager ~ manager of my very own private country club. What a nightmare it turned out to be.  From that experience I do not want to return to the restaurant/country club industry.  It has taken me awhile to get over that last work experience, however, it is time for me to move on.

Years ago, I worked as a receptionist at a Real Estate office.  It was a great job, at the time.  I enjoyed it and was able to leave the office with a clear head every night.  What a feeling that was!  I am looking for something along those lines.  I am very good with people and a great multi tasker, however, this time in my life all I want is to go into work and do my best and then come home.  I have always been the type of person to give 110%  how do I get the attention of the employers that I seek outside the restaurant/club industry, since that is where all my experience lies.

  1. Start by making a list of your transferrable skills (any skills you used on the job that you could use in other industries).
  2. Make a list of our interests (the worst thing you can do is take a job in an industry you have no interest in.
  3. Get help with your resume and cover letter so that it shows off all of your skills
  4. Create a video resume to set yourself apart.
