Restaurant Manager toI am a 27 year old Assistant General Manager for one of the busiest and most demanding restaurants on the west coast. Working in the hospitality industry for nearly 10 years I have decided it is time to move on and try something new. I do not have a college education and am extremely nervous to leave the comfort zone of what I know so well and am successful with. I feel that I have enough management experience to tackle something new and be successful, however, I am not sure what direction to go. Any suggestions on how hospitality/ management skills may be applicable to other industries? I am open to ideas... Yes, two industries come to mind: First of all the healthcare industry would be an excellent choice. The numbers are staggering in terms of jobs and security (and you don' t need to have a college degree to secure a very well paying career - although one would always be beneficial) Also, there is the travel industry (airlines/cruise ships/train companies). Although you may have to start at the entry level, once you get your foot in the door, the possibilities are numerous. Of course, you could change your career path and pursue a career in the lodging branch of hospitality (hotels/resort/corporate housing) which could inspire you to consider property management. Securing an apartment management position has great perks such as rent-free housing and no commute. If you are not interested in pursuing a college degree at this time, you could enroll in one of the many career schools that would help you find a job in your chosen field. These schools usually have a placement counselor and can also recommend you to employers that they may partner with. Having managerial experience is always a big plus since the skill package is transferrable across all industries. I wish you the best with your new career choice. Hope this helps. The healthcare industry is something I' d never considered and travel is not an option for me at the moment. My wife and I just opened our own small business and it requires much of my available time outside of the restaurant. I will have to do some research but the information you' ve provided is very helpfull. More than anything I am looking for ideas... I have considered other avenues of the hospitality industry and am still reviewing my options. Thank you very much for taking the time to respond to my post. I wish you and your wife the best with your new business. Starting a new business can demand a lot of time but can be rewarding also. What a great way to kick off the new year! | |
