Bank Teller Training/TestHi,
I was wondering if anyone has gone through the bank teller training and what the test at the end of training consist of? I am not great at math, so I hope that's not most of the test. Any help will be appriciated! Thanks! A bank teller position will require basic math skills to include addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. It is doubtful that you would need any advanced knowledge of fractions as the customer cannot state to a teller, "deposit 1/8 in savings, 2/3 in checking and give me the remainder". The deposit slip(s) have to be made out by the customer in advance with the appropriate amounts already filled in. You will most likely be trained on the proper greetings to be used and the questions to ask the customer. Ten key and data entry will be tested as you will need to be able to use a calculator. You will probably be asked how to divide a certain amount of currency into the largest denominations and smallest denominations available. For example: $100 could be divided into:
and so on. You will be asked the proper way to speak to and treat an unruly customer. For example: How would you respond to a customer who was upset because a fee was deducted from his checking account for using an unauthorized ATM machine? Or, my favorite fee deduction, How would you respond to an irate customer who wanted to know why a fee was deducted for going into the bank instead of using the ATM machine? Training on how to recognize counterfeit bills and training on how to recognize the various colors, shapes and inks used in the non-counterfeit bills. Also, what to do and who to notify if a counterfeit bill should come your way. The individual bank also has its own rules and procedures that you will be trained on. Former bank teller here. Bank teller training lasts about 2 weeks and if you can add and subtract, mulitply and divide, you should be o.k. Its not all math and you are not sending a man to the moon here. What they really push are compliance issues; what a customer can do and what they cannot do. There are a lot of rules and procedures to remember. You need to be organized and not get frustrated when a nasty customer tells you that they want to send a wire to Timbuktu, deposit a 3rd party check, get some cash back and that they are in a hurry. In a bank, the customer is always right - even when they are wrong. Good Luck! Hi Kelly,
Thank you so much for your reply. I just got back from my interview, I think it went great, but I will let you know what happens :) Your info was very helpful, Thanks again! Hi,
I just wanted to say thanks for your reply. It helps a lot to hear from someone who's already been there. You made me feel better. Thanks again! Before you accept a job at a bank (any job) please, please, please take a look at them and see where they stand in the sub-prime mortgage market mess. WaMu just laid off 3000 people last week and Countrywide is having serious issues. Old, big solid banks with strong credit risk policies and less investment in the sub-prime market are most likely to come out of this ok and without you ending up laid off in a few months as cutbacks make their way through the ranks. Good luck! Tess | |
