Between grad schools interning
I have somewhat of a conundrum. I'm 24 and currently between graduate schools (the program I started at wasn't quite to my liking, and I'm in the process of applying to another program, but in another state), and working a job (Insurance Agency) that is absolutely unrelated to any of my education (BM - Music Ed and MS in Arts Administration). I have to have this job just to pay the bills. However, there are some internships in my city in the field that I am aiming for - Arts Administration/Management. Is it completely crazy of me to cut my hours/quit my current job and focus on internships for the sake of experience and a leg up in the field? Is there ANY way to get any kind of funding so that I can stay afloat during this interim time? Since I'm not actually IN school, loans and such are hard to come by, and I have very little savings to live on while I do this. But in the end, I'm not happy at this job, because it's not related or interesting or even a position with the promise of advancement. I would honestly be much happier interning full time, even if it meant not having any extra money. I'm contemplating doing it anyway - I just would like some reassurance that I'm not completely off my nut for even considering this option. Thoughts? I don't think you're crazy for considering an internship. Perhaps you can bulk it up with another part-time job such as retail. If you're going to get a Masters in Art, you've got to make a serious plan on future gainful employment. Internships are a good way to get your foot in a door that will turn into a job down the road, especially in a field like yours where there are not going to be very many jobs. This is the time to really sit down and figure out what all the possible jobs are going to be for you after you've spent several tens of thousands of dollars on that Masters. If you think paying your rent is tough on the current insurance job, imagine where that's going to go when you've finished your Masters and have to pay those loans back too.
