Career Tips

how soon is too soon

I have a bit of an interesting situation on my hands.  I graduated from college in 2005, and am on my 3rd job already since graduating.  The first lasted almost a year, the second about 6 months, and have been in the third for about the same.  I really wanted to stick to my current job for a few years in order to finally have credible job experience (the other 2 didn't last because I relocated out of state, then the company was dissolved, respectively), but the job I have now A. is in a department that I now realize is not what I want to do long term and B. is AWFUL, making me work long hours, stay awake at night worrying, etc.  My question is, can I start looking for a new job in a different field, or do I have to stay in this miserable job for the greater good.  Help!

What field do you want to work in? Can you switch departments but stay in the same industry? Do you need extra certification and/or schooling for a different position? Can you stay in a comparable position in any other industry without the extra schooling, etc?

There is no harm in sending out resumes and scouting out the possibilities. The dissolution of your previous employer cannot be held against you in terms of solid work history. It simply is no fault of your own that you are no longer employed there.

Keep working your current position until something better comes along. When you go for an interview, don't say anything about how the job keeps you up at night with worry or that it is AWFUL. Simply state that you have come to the realization that you would like to return to a position which is more like the one you had with the company that went out of business.

Today many businesses are getting run on the edge so it is not uncommon to find people with resumes that have many short stints.  Since you are still a rather fresh grad I would relax and take your time.  Do a LOT of NETWORKING and investigation and don't jump ship unless 1) you have a better opportunity setup or 2) you HAVE TO jump to keep paying your bills.

Thanks for the advice, I love my family and all, but sometimes it is best to get outside opinions.

I am thinking of either getting into a corporate communications department, or change over to Human Resources as a rep or employee relations professional.  I am leaning towards HR, but really don't know how to get into it.  As for switching departments, I am not sure how that would go.  I believe that you need your current department's permission, and I think they would be angry for me leaving, although you never know.

Thanks for the advice, and don't worry, I would never go into an interview talking about my current job like that (I took a zillion interview classes in college, that is pretty much rule 1wink).
