taking a career step backI have been working in the same field for 40 years and would now like to take a step back to a part-time support position, either in the same field ( at a different company ) or in a new field. My experience can be applied in any business. My resume obviously shows my success and maybe over-qualification for the job ads to which I am responding. How can I let a prospective employer know that I am willing to take a lesser/support position, for less salary? I can apply for part-time positions, but should my cover letter specifically state something to the effect that I want to kick it back a notch or two? Your cover letter should definitely state something to the effect of your "being retired and wanting to supplement your income" or (if you aren't retired) "you are ready to retire from your current profession and would like to work part time to keep your skills active and pass your knowledge on to the next working generation." You may also think about including the lie regarding "passing your knowledge on" in your objective field. While I have read on these boards the belief that many employers do not look at objectives, I have never met an interviewer or a human resource representative who did not want to know what you want to see yourself accomplish in the near to distant future. I particularly like your comment about a "lie" --- no lie there really... i can teach alot to younger people and to other people returning to the workforce after being home raising their kids. my resume only goes back 3 jobs - current and two prior, but that covers 29 years, I meant that to read "include a line about passing your knowledge on to others.....I either didn' t hit the "n" key hard enough or another post that I was responding to regarding lies on resumes, in interviews, etc was still present in my thought processes. Again, my apologies since I honestly meant that you can do a lot for future generations in terms of teaching them. | |
