Career Tips

moving DOWN the career ladder

Three months ago, I moved from a position as an administrative assistant to a job with much more responsibility.  It was a great promotion, but now that I've been here a while,  I realize that this is absolutely NOT what I wanted to do.  I really want a job that I can leave behind at 5 pm - not one that is going to take over my whole life.  I have too much that is important to me when I walk out the doors than to bring work home with me.  It doesn't help that I am in over my head. I didn't misrepresent myself in any way during the interview process, so that's not the problem.  In a way, I feel like those I interviewed misrepresented the job to me.  In any case, there's no bitterness, just the growing, gnawing realization that this isn't what I want!

So now the question - how would you represent this - on a resume, in a cover letter, in an interview.  I'm happy to work 40 plus hours a week.  I'm just not willing to work 80 plus.  I have a family, kids and a life...j

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Don't address this issue in a resume or cover letter. In the interview when the question comes up regarding why you want to leave your present position, simply say:

"while the challenges intrigue me, I find that the position is not a fit for me. Knowing this, I am looking to return to an administrative position similar to the one I had previously in which I can also utilize a few of the new skills I have acquired."

Simple and to the point while pointing out that, while you recognize your limitations, you are not adverse to assisting on projects outside your job description.

Thanks.  That's good advice!
