Concept: To vs. From

Thinking about the concept of to vs. from in career change and want to raise the topic for conversation.

Career change that is driven by running or moving away from something (boring or bad job, bad fit, lack of opportunity, demand, changing market circumstances) is normal. Your career change might start from a factorthat makes you want to leave. However, unless you can find what youwant, and develop strong ideas and reasons why you want it, and moreimportantly, why you, your search and efforts are likely to be less effective.

Career change that is driven by moving to / towards something (the next thing you want to do, your dream, an idea of where you fit better, and in what kind of work.) The next step. The next challenge. The job you want.  Something you want to build, create or be.
  • From the prospective employer' s perspective, they don' t care what you are leaving. They want to know what you can do for them. And they want to know that you want to be there.
  • Selling your background into something new requires you to get a solid handle on the big "why you" question.
  • Making a change without using and learning from your experience frankly makes a job change into something worse or not much better very likely.
  • And in my experience, the people in your network don' t respond well to questions like "what should I do," or "I am looking for a job." It is easier to respond to specifics or ideas.
Market demand certainly plays into it, but I suggest it needs to start with that kernel of idea and desire you might have.
