Career Change Advice

I have been thinking about a career change from science to business (accounting).

The reason for wanting the change is that I want something that is more stable and more versatile.

I am almost 39 years old and not sure whether changing to accounting will be the right thing to do.

I need some help and would like to learn what it is like to be an accountant.

Having changed career myself, I' d strongly recommend that you first research the area and specific job type you are interested in. Accounting is a broad field (just as science is broad!) so try to be more specific about your wants and needs. Why did you choose business/accounting? If it is because you have a genuine desire to be an accountant, a passion for business, or is it the money? I can guarantee that changing careers for the sake of a salary is not going to make you happy, or financially secure. You will only be good at your new career, and earn the top range of salary if you genuinely CARE about what you are going to be doing. A self assessment of your personality type, your likes, dislikes, strengths, weaknesses, passions and values  will help, followed by a professional assessment with a career guidance councellor.

You also need to decide where you want work - ie. in which sector : Forexample - leverage your science experience and work in the accountingdepartment of an academic or private research institute orpharmaceutical company; or you may prefer to get out of sciencealtogether and work as an accountant to a completely different sector.

Once you are sure about the new career direction, talk to your friends and family. Recruit their help to find somebody you know or they know who is already in the field (eg an accountant in your case) and who will be able to spare you an hour. Discuss the career, the options and barriers to entry (educational requirements, etc), their career expereince, and get more names from them as to who would be good to talk to. You may get some response here - but anyone can post to discussion borad anonymously. How much are you willing to trust such advice, and are you really willing to risk your future career choice on what you read here (including this post!)

Taking an evening class to study accounting part time will bring you into contact with like minded individuals, and people already in the accounting career who are gaining professional qualifications or upskilling - hang around after class and talk to them. Share your expereinces and they will reciprocate, you' ll gain some valuable contacts, and you might make some new friends too.

A fantastic resource is "What color is your parachute" available at your local bookshop or online - a second hand copy will be cheap to pick up and it is worth it' s weight in gold, even though the style is a bit folksy for my liking.
